Preaching - Lesson 2
Hermeneutics-1
The word Hermeneutics when related to the study of the Bible means "the art or science of the interpretation." Hermeneutics defines a set of rules that we use for interpreting the written word of God, the Bible. The fact that we need rules is not debatable, since we've all seen what happens when someone's comments are taken out of context. The question is "what rules do we apply to the Bible, and how to apply them in specific cases.
The folowing comments are taken from an article on Bill Gothard's website on Hermenutics. The link to the whole article is:
Hermeneutics 1
Bill states; Hermeneutics is defined in one dictionary as ?the art of finding the meaning of an author?s words and phrases, and of explaining it to others.? When applied to Scripture, accurate hermeneutics would require the scholar to:
1. Study the context of the passage and the theme of the book.
2. Look up the actual meaning of each word in the original languages.
3. Note the verb tenses, the cases, and other grammatical determinants.
4. Learn the cultural setting of the passage.
5. Determine what the original readers understood it to mean.
6. Check out cross-references to see how the words are used in other contexts.
7. See how the first mention of the word or topic is presented in the Bible.
8. Confirm an interpretation with two or three similar passages
