Genesis Bible Study Lesson 1 Questions

1.What was this plan/mystery God established before the world was created?

HINT: In the beginning there was God and He....created. Before creation God put a plan (mystery) in place. Read - 1 Corinthians 2:7-8; Romans 16:25; Revelation 10:7 ; Revelation 13:8

2. Who is God? List His attributes (Character & Characteristics). Define the words Omniscience, Omnipresence, Omnipotent, and Immutable.

3.Background on Genesis -

a) Who wrote the book?
b) When was it written?
c) What was the original language that it was written in?
d) What is meaning of the word Genesis?


4) Who is the author of Scripture?

HINT:Read - John 17:17; Joshua 1:8; Romans 15:4; John 5:39; Romans 3:2; Colossians 3:16

5) What is the purpose of Scripture?

Hint:Read - 2 Timothy 3:15-17 & John 20:31

6) Define the word faith (believe) as defined in Hebrews chapter 11. How is faith formulated (Rom 10:17)?

7)Define the concept of creation. Who was involved in creation? Read - Genesis 1:1; John 1:1-4 & 14; Hebrews 1:1-3 Explain the concept of the Trinity.

8) Define the word doctrine and state the main theme/doctrine of chapters 1& 2 of Genesis.

9)Define the word theology. Give a brief description of systematic theology and give an example how systematic theology is used in Bible study.

10) In Genesis 2:16-17 God gives Adam a commandment. What was it? Read Hosea 6:7 in NIV, NASB. NLT translations. Do you see a relationship between these two verses?

Facts About the Book of Genesis


1. There are 50 chapters.
2. The accepted author is Moses.
3. Genesis provides background regarding how everything began.
4. The word Genesis means “origin” or “beginning”. The English title is based on the name given by Greek translators.
5. The Greek name can be translated to mean “source” or “generation”.
6. The original title in Hebrew is Berephith and translates to “In the beginning”.
7. Genesis tells us how people were created and placed in a perfect environment.
8. Genesis also explains how sin began and how God would treat evil.
9. Want to know how nations began? Where language came from? How people divided work? The answers can all be found in Genesis.
10. God focuses on one family---Abraham’s and we learn how the Hebrew people began with stories including Isaac, Jacob, and Joseph.
11. Genesis reveals God’s glorious plan to build a kingdom of redeemed people.
12. The themes in Genesis are creation, death, flood, covenant, and providence.
13. Is Jesus mentioned in Genesis? Yes! When God commanded Abraham to sacrifice Isaac (22:8) we see a substitute being offered in the form of a ram just as Jesus acted as our substitute.
