Introduction to Genesis Bible study

Genesis (the book of beginnings) is not only the foundation of the Pentateuch and Old Testament, but also the entire Bible. The focus of both the book of Genesis and the whole Bible is God (in the beginning God). Not only did "in the beginning God create", but He also "in the beginning God commanded" Adam not to eat from the "tree of knowledge," Adam's disobedience was the original sin of man. This sin established the need of God's plan, which was laid before the foundation of the World.

1 Cor 2:7-8 speaks of God's plan or mystery. It states, "Now, the wisdom we speak of is the secret wisdom of God, which was hidden in former times, though he made it for our benefit before the world began. But the rulers of this world have not understood it; if they had, they would never have crucified our glorious Lord."

The first three chapters of Genesis lay the ground work for most key Bible doctrines such as foreknowledge, foreordination, free will (freedom), fellowship with God, and the faithfulness of God.

Genesis is one of the five books written by Moses and is the foundation for both the Jewish and Christian faith. These five Bible books written by Moses are also sometimes called the Torah or "Law".

The purpose of the Bible study of Genesis is like the study of any section of Scripture, which can give one the wisdom to receive the salvation that comes by trusting in Christ Jesus. All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives. The "Word of God" straightens us out and teaches us to do what is right.

The "Word of God" is God's way of preparing us in every way, fully equipping us for every good thing God wants us to do.

In Psalms, we find that the "Word of God" says that if we will study (hide in our hearts) the Word of God, we will not sin against God. It also says that the "Word of God" should be a lamp to our feet and a light to our paths. Both of these Bible verses imply that if we meditate upon the "Word of God" we will not stumble into sin.

As we study the book of Genesis our faith in God and His word should be strengthened since the Bible states "faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God."

During this Bible study of Genesis, the Bible student of Four Soils Ministry will be exposed to many of the key Christian doctrines and the basic tools of Biblical interpretation and presentation. Each Bible student should become a more thoughtful interpreter of the Bible as they meditate upon God's Holy Word.

Bottom line for the Genesis Bible study course is that the Bible student should increase their knowledge of Genesis, of the Bible as a whole, and of God, while they are developing a stronger Biblical Worldview.
